Maglera Doe Boy released his music video for “The Suns Song” on 22nd of February. The music video is a visual masterpiece as it is a phenomenal song which is extracted from his debut album, ‘Diaspora’.
The music video captures the sheer poetic essence of the song through interesting compositions, playing with black & white and full colour images. It’s as though we’re watching the song unfold all of its intimate parts and lyrics. The song itself serves as a reflection of Glera’s growing up and how all that he has endured has made him grateful because of the lessons and the blessings that have come unto him. It also serves as a gospel to the youth and the young kids that are still trying to make their way out of the hood.
The beginning of the song Maglera states in isiTswana, “Today hase maobane, today could change kaosane”, which means that today is not yesterday and that today could change the next day. Glera possesses a beautiful and authentic poetic nature that comes through in his music, not shying away from being intimate or personal. The intentionality of his work is clearly evident and the message is received. He is sparking the minds of the hopeless, those that are trapped in the darkness and need a reminder that there is light.
The music video was shot in the township, Langa, in Cape Town. Interestingly enough, “Langa” refers to “the sun” in isiXhosa and connects to the title of the song. There is so much purity and light that this song radiates of which the visuals further amplify creating a transformative viewing and listening experience. Simply put, it’s art. The entire experience of the music video is a result of a great creative team! This including the director, Mzonke Maloney, the cinematographer, Jason Prins, Shelby Ncube who did the editing , Nic Apolostoli who did the colouring , Tiny who did the styling, as well as Koki Beuzana who featured in it.
The music video is phenomenal and amplified Maglera’s ability to story-tell through his music video. If you are yet to watch it, I urge you to do so as soon as possible!
