Pretoria-born rapper and songwriter Jack Happy Nkuna, better known as Mochen, officially stepped into a new chapter of his career with the release of his long-awaited debut album ‘NORTH Vol 1. (The Prophecy)’. The 14-track project, titled NORTH Vol.1 (The Prophecy), boasts an impressive lineup of guest appearances, including Wordz, Loatinover Pounds, Focalistic, Thato Saul, The Big Hash, 25K and more, each contributing to the album’s layered storytelling and rich lyrical depth.

Mochen wastes no time setting the tone on the intro track, “Welcome To The North.” Comparing himself to a diamond formed under pressure, he immediately introduces themes of perseverance, resilience, and purpose. The rapper encourages listeners to remain persistent through hardship, suggesting that struggle often shapes character and strength. His emotionally charged delivery blends seamlessly with the dreamy production, creating a nostalgic atmosphere as he reflects on personal losses, God’s promises over his life, and the protection he believes comes from his mother’s prayers. The soulful backing vocals that close out the record elevate the song even further, adding warmth and emotional depth.

On “Northside Courtside,” featuring the lyrically sharp Thato Saul, Mochen opens up about the harsh realities of street life and the pain of losing peers while trying to survive. He candidly expresses his fear of losing more friends to death and wishes he could bring back those he has already lost. Despite the heavy subject matter, the production carries an energetic and uplifting feel, balancing emotion with momentum.

The album shifts gears on “Flava,” featuring Saint Cielo & Khalee G as a backing vocalist. Unlike the introspective opening tracks, this record leans into a melodic, vibey dance sound centred around nightlife, style, and success. Mochen embraces themes of confidence and celebration while paying homage to fellow Pretoria rapper 25K by referencing the hit song “Culture Vulture” with the line, “25 o boletse retla khutsa January.”

Spirituality continues to play a significant role throughout the project. On “Modimo o Teng,” Mochen reflects on how prayer and God’s presence have protected and guided him throughout his journey, while simultaneously showcasing his lyrical sharpness and conviction.

The celebratory energy continues on “Celebration,” featuring Pabi Cooper and Saint Cielo, as well as “Pizza (Dough)” featuring K.Keed and DJ Sliqe. Both tracks are driven by booming 808s and infectious party-ready production. Here, Mochen paints a vivid picture of his rise from humble beginnings to a life filled with money, fame, luxury, and attention. The songs capture the excitement of success while reflecting on how far he has come.

Midway through the album, Mochen delivers one of the project’s boldest moments with “Pitori vs. Pitori.” Backed by a daring and confrontational instrumental, the rapper addresses the state of the music industry and the noise surrounding it, particularly online discourse on the platform formerly known as Twitter, now X. He emphasises that while others talk, he has remained focused on the work. More importantly, he proudly puts respect on Pretoria’s name, boldly declaring that Pretoria’s only competition is itself.

“Pure Energy,” featuring Wordz, stands out as one of the album’s most heartfelt moments. The track explores themes of health, wealth, and prosperity over dreamy harmonies, jazzy saxophone textures, and soothing backing vocals. On “Show Up,” Mochen takes listeners through the highs and lows of his music journey, reflecting on both his accomplishments and the challenges he has endured while building his career.

“Shlime” centres around loyalty and the expectations that come with it, with Saint Cielo & Khalee G’s angelic vocals adding a soulful finish to the record. The album closes powerfully with “Legendary Status,” an emotionally heavy outro layered with gospel-inspired melodies and deeply personal lyricism. Mochen pours his heart out as he reflects on the loss of his father, the struggles his mother has endured, and the traumatic experience of his sibling nearly losing their life to suicide on his birthday. Despite the pain, the song ultimately becomes a statement of perseverance and determination. The album concludes with a touching voice note from Mochen’s mother, offering life advice and grounding the project in authenticity and love.

For a debut album, NORTH Vol.1 (The Prophecy) is remarkably cohesive and thoughtfully curated. Although Mochen spent years building momentum through singles and standout features, this project proves he is equally capable of crafting a complete and intentional body of work. While the album’s heavy use of features may leave some listeners wanting more solo moments from Mochen himself, the collaborations are strategically selected and contribute meaningfully to the listening experience rather than overshadowing him.

Through this project, Mochen sheds light on grief, faith, ambition, survival, and personal growth. More importantly, he reminds listeners that consistency, patience, and belief in oneself can turn even the harshest beginnings into purpose. NORTH Vol.1 (The Prophecy) is more than just a debut album — it is a deeply personal journey told through Mochen’s lens. It stands as one of the more compelling hip-hop releases of the year and is undoubtedly a project worth experiencing from start to finish.
