Picture an early-morning first sip to your coffee with the sun busking in your face as you begin the planning phase to your day. Now, like any other day, one will stumble upon challenging times; it is how one reacts that determines the mood of the day throughout. ‘Cold Chinese Food’ understood that as their latest single “Ethiopian Coffee” with Sam Turpin, The Charles Géne Suite, Muhammad Dawjee & Rāms, beams off a light of positivity and self-value through the usage of easy-listening lyrics and meaningful messages behind them.
I first heard the song in the early phases of the winter season, and my reaction to it was “why haven’t I heard it any sooner?”. It was then that I knew that there is a lot of hidden talent across the continent, one just needs to keep their ear to the ground. The one thing that stood out to me about this particular release was the production style, as the musical duo infused Jazz elements with core Hip-Hop/Rap elements whilst still cross-referencing Pop Culture. The visual aid allowed me to understand the depth of the message behind the single, as it steadily serves as an early riser tune.
“Ethiopian Coffee” is a well-blended release as it also complements the stage name, which is stemming over into the food industry. For a moment, when I was reading the headline, I thought it was a restaurant introducing African food/beverages into their menu until I clicked on it. It really takes a certain amount of love and passion to creatively find such a unique aesthetic for a single release. If you have not yet listened to the single, then you are up for a stellar sonic experience from the play of words to the blending of themes. It will leave you with an urge for more, but whilst we wait for that more, let us enjoy our “Ethiopian Coffee”.
