SA-based Zimbabwean alt-RnB artist Tom Saison pours out his heart in his latest EP, “For Those That Failed At Love.” In this vulnerable release, Saison delves deep into themes of heartbreak, longing, and personal growth across the EP’s four tracks. Tom Saison epitomizes an eclectic fusion of genres such as Hip Hop, R&B, Jazz, Alternative, and Soul. In truth, his exploratory spirit is one of the EP’s main takeaways. His admission of failure is also an admission of the courage to try. ‘For Those That Failed At Love’ is Saison’s challenge to us to try and test, to listen and learn.
His debut album, ‘Road To…’, was an audacious step into an anxious alternative R&B space. Tom’s voice filled a gap many were embarrassed to admit existed. Nevertheless, he took the themes of his album to heart and embarked on a journey for better and more. Consequently, he founded Saison Sundays, a live concert event that captures the essence of Johannesburg’s alternative RnB music scene. The space he created allowed his voice to have a residency and allowed his music to attract an active audience. Furthermore, ‘For Those That Failed At Love’ is a reminder that music has moods and moments. In the case of love and loss, he is having a moment and feeling in the mood.
The singles “Stay Long” and “No Way” precede the EP and tease the tastebuds for what’s to come. The EP starts with “Nowhere,” a meditative introduction to the story of a troublesome emotional journey. The focus track, “Who Said,” distinguishes itself through emotive vocals and infectious rhythms, sure to be a rebellious lover’s favourite. Finally, “Chasin’” and “Scat Song” round out the EP, showcasing Saison’s ingenuity and boldness.
Tom Saison’s journey as an artist involves a seamless blend of rhythms from several genres and sounds, producing a unique sound that resonates with a diverse audience. For Those That Failed At Love surveys an interesting blend of sounds that require an open heart. “It’s a very easy listen. Even with all of its experimental sounds,’ it somehow manages to be easy on the ear,” he said about the EP’s divergent sound.
‘Scat Song,’ an ode to dance music, wraps the EP with an electronic vibe that continues sweeping worldwide, thanks to artists like Kaytranada. However, channeling a high-quality vocal performance on this beat can be challenging. “I’ve spent an insane amount of hours listening to J Something from MiCasa and Samthing Soweto. So, my vocal approach was really reminiscent of them,” he said. The track features RnB singer Keamo, who adds an essential element to the back-and-forth theme of the track. Concluding the EP on a higher, more hopeful note through ‘Scat Song’ is wholly satisfying. Above all, it creates room for reflection while also grabbing your attention.
EPs and albums are responsible for telling a more holistic story than a single. With this purpose in mind, Tom delivers meaning and messaging in his writing. “The message that I’d like to convey to my community and supporters is that every now and then, we’re going to fall short,” he said. “I wanted to create a soundtrack for those navigating the complexities of love and life,” he continues. “When it comes to my music, it’s almost always about embracing vulnerability and finding strength in our shared experiences.”
