Eswatini-based hip-hop artist Grixxly (pronounced Griz-lee) has teamed up with South African lyricist Pdot O for his first single of the year, ‘Where I’m From.’ This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Grixxly’s career ahead of the release of his highly anticipated sophomore project. Evidently, the track reflects on their roots and formative experiences, capturing the essence of life in both Eswatini and South Africa. Unquestionably, ‘Where I’m From’ takes listeners on an evocative journey through their neighborhoods. Somber jazz piano keys and occasional saxophone melodies create a soulful, haunting backdrop. In addition, Grixxly and Pdot O’s verses tell stories of resilience, hardship, and community. Through their storytelling, they paint vivid pictures of the contrasting yet shared realities of growing up in Southern Africa.

The collaboration brings together two unique voices from different regions. Pdot O, an award-winning South African rapper, was born in Umtata, Eastern Cape, raised in East London, and honed his craft in Pretoria. A prolific and multilingual artist, Pdot O has firmly established himself in the South African hip-hop scene. In general, his lyrics often reflect deep introspection, and he believes in his work’s importance of clarity and depth. “When my words haven’t been heard properly, then I fail to see the point,” he once said.

Musical storytellers inspire Grixxly so much, he adopts this persona in his artistry. His lyrics connect with listeners on a personal level, blending intricate wordplay with heartfelt narratives. Grixxly and Pdot O’s creative synergy form a dynamic partnership, seamlessly blending their individual talents. Their work celebrates Southern Africa’s rich cultural heritage. Therefore, it allows the collaboration to showcase the unity and shared experiences within the African hip-hop scene. Both artists bring their own energy to ‘Where I’m From,’ and their voices complement each other perfectly.

After a standout year in 2024 with tracks like ‘Musa WeNkhosi’ and ‘No Mistakes,’ Grixxly’s momentum continues to grow. He is the first Swati artist in history on Apple Music’s The Nadeska Show, feeding into his selection as Africa Rising: Artist of the Week. Undoubtedly, these achievements solidify his place in African hip-hop. ‘Where I’m From’ previews Grixxly’s upcoming album, which explores identity, growth, and artistic evolution. Importantly, fans can expect more of his signature storytelling and captivating beats. With his talent and drive, Grixxly can expect greater success in the African music scene.

I am a black girl who loves good music. The commercial and underground South African music scene is buzzing, and I would love my corner of the internet to highlight that buzz.
