Netflix’s iNumber Number: Jozi Gold Shares The Power of Purposeful Impact.

The blurred line between lawfulness and lawlessness takes centre stage in the action-packed South African film, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold. Chili Ncgobo, played by the incomparable Sdumo Mtshali, leads a star-studded cast through the bridges and railways of Johannesburg. He and his right-hand, played by Presley Chweneyagae, are searching for the elusive Hyena Man, played by Bongile Mantsai. Jozi Gold premieres 10 years after the film’s debut on Showmax. It joins an impressive list of South African action movies and series found only on Netflix.

An exclusive screening, held the night before the film’s premiere, brought together South Africa’s most celebrated actors for a first look. During a panel discussion led by Warren Masemola, director Donovan Marsh expressed his gratitude for the actors’ commitment and discipline during production. “The actors came prepared,” said Brenda Ngxoli, who plays the charismatic, calculated Brigadier eager to line her own pockets.

The film does an outstanding job of paying homage to Johannesburg’s urban culture. Gqom music seems to be the obvious choice for car chases and fight scenes. However, kwaito, hip-hop, and Afrikaans folk music is heard in the film’s slower-paced moments.

Following the successful debut of the Mzansi Magic original series, Shaka iLembe, the South African film/tv industry’s growth is inspiring. Even so, streaming services like Netflix heavily export local artistry to an international community. The collaboration ignites our efforts to “open up the industry.” Indeed, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold opens up the mind to what homegrown creativity and community can achieve.

There is no news about whether or not a third iNumber Number will be released soon in anticipation of a trilogy. Nevertheless, if the support from Netflix, the multitude of local talent, and the film’s final scene is anything to go by, we should buckle up for more thrilling action.

I am a black girl who loves good music. The commercial and underground South African music scene is buzzing, and I would love my corner of the internet to highlight that buzz.
