“Coffee in The Morning” is a song about finding oneself reconnecting with a former lover. After plucking up the courage to go outside and begin one’s healing journey in the single, Baby Vuka. Coffee In The Morning takes an unexpected ‘U’turn. Zimkitha narrates the story of revisiting a past relationship (spinning the block). The lyrics of the song unpack the process of how one falls back in love by metaphorically unpacking the conversation using coffee, tea and Hennessy.
Metaphor Breakdown:
The ‘coffee’ in the morning is a metaphor for the cordial conversation between exes that turns into ‘tea’ in the afternoon which is a metaphor for the intimate, transparent conversation about how life has been to ‘Hennessy’ in the evening which is a metaphor for trusting the poetry of the moment and each other, enough to open up about personal thoughts, feelings, letting go of pride and above all, connecting.
In simpler terms, the single represents moments in life where we gain the courage to go outside and live our lives as though we have fully healed from our past scars but life being life, it seemingly finds itself bringing triggers that remind us of those scars which test our healing progress from those painful moments. Zimkitha does not shy away from stacking up her harmonies that blend naturally with the lyrics and overall production of the song. Her rich vocal delivery coupled with her nuanced and distinct tone take the listener back to a soulful, nostalgic place whilst leaving behind a seductively soothing effect.
Produced by K.Fresh, “Coffee In The Morning” serves as an extension towards Zimkitha’s authentic storytelling in which she intentionally mixes IsiXhosa and English languages over a Jazzy Neo-Soul inspired by the sonics of the South African jazz of the 1970’s. It is a core representation to her staying true to her sound and honouring the set tone of “Baby Vuka” for “The Black Enigma”.
