More food vendors, shorter queues, food trucks galore and a smorgasbord of fresh, bold flavours from around the world – that’s what awaits visitors at the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival Powered by LottoStar, which will be tickling taste buds and tantalising palates over the weekend of 23 and 24 September 2023.
Plus, the Channel O Drip Stage line-up for the two days has been revealed – and the red-hot array of local DJs and performers, with a strong female focus, will get the party pumping with their infectious amapiano, hip-hop and house grooves! On Saturday 23 September, hitting the decks throughout the afternoon and into the night with their anthemic tracks and powerful mixes are Scorpion Kings, Myztro, Daliwonga, Stunna, Yahoo, Dbn Gogo, DJ Mdu and LeeArt.
On Sunday 24 September, leading DJing lights Venom, Nobantu, Kelvin Momo, Toss, DJ Zinhle, Murumba Pitch, Tyler ICU and Kwesta will be delivering the hottest dance floor hits of the moment. Remember – Monday is a public holiday, so you have our full permission to dance the night away! In addition to a scorching music line-up that will get the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit pumping in celebration of Heritage Day, the centrepiece of the festival remains its scrumptious food offering on the Proudly South African Delicious Mile. For the festival’s 10th anniversary outing, the organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure an around-the-world taste adventure to remember.
One of the local foodie “stars” taking centre stage will be The Gourmet Shrine, the winner of the 2022 Soweto Kota Festival, with self-taught cook Vusi Mkhabela serving up mouthwatering gourmet kotas packed with fresh, wholesome ingredients fit for a king or queen. For a lip-smacking alternative, Sumting Fresh will once again be serving up its legendary fried chicken – and, for a spicier alternative, Joburg’s iconic Poppy’s peri-peri chicken is another “hot” highlight not to be missed!
“We have a cosmopolitan feast of flavours lined up, but since it’s the Heritage Day weekend we are keeping the essence of our food offering quintessentially and deliciously South African,” says Funeka Pepetta, Media Director of the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival. Yearning for something hot and spicy? Take a taste journey to South America with chimichanga, assado and chimichurri sauce – your tastebuds will thank you!
Over and above the Korean, Japanese, Asian and Argentinian cuisine on offer, foodies can expect a parade of their favourites from previous festivals – from Wing Republic and Kota King to Dunky Donuts and Mexican street-food tacos from Mocharitos. They join a vast array of food trucks (such as the LuviesFood truck with its Asian-inspired dishes such as bao buns) and vendors serving up freshly made pizzas, biltong and even dombolo (dumpling) burgers, courtesy of Why Cook.
And of course, any Heritage Weekend festival isn’t the same without the distinctive aromas and flavours that remind us just what makes South Africa so lekker – shisanyama and braaivleis! Come and enjoy the spring time weather and tuck into a juicy sosatie or a sizzling steak and get into the long-weekend vibe. If meat is not for you, sample some vegan and pescetarian specialties, courtesy of Exotically Divine (for incredible fusion vegan African cuisine), The Prawnery and The Trout Palace. This expanded seafood offering is a new addition to the festival and is set to become a firm fishy favourite among visitors!
Wash it all down with a beverage of your choice, including the divine Yamama Gemmer home-made non-alcoholic ginger beer and the latest dreamy summertime favourite – bubble tea (or boba), the trend that’s on everyone’s lips. You’ll find this and more at the Proudly South African Village, where our very own #BuyLocaladvocacy organisation will be hosting traders selling their irresistible homegrown, homemade delicacies.
Furthermore, for 50 young informal traders this will be their first hands-on experience of a large food festival – they are this year’s intake of the newly launched Delicious Festival Trader Academy powered by FoodBev Seta. The traders are at the start of their 5-month programme upskilling them with the necessary knowledge to successfully operate their own businesses in more formal and competitive environments.
Allow your senses to take flight and soar this Heritage Day weekend with a fusion of local flavours and global cuisine, perfectly complemented by a top-flight music line-up. Come and take a bite out of summer and revel in the things that make us proudly and joyfully South African this Heritage Day weekend – our awesome food, music, fashion and people!
