Hailing from the beautiful streets of Thohoyandou is Venda artist, Given Da Chief as he continues to represent his hometown in style with his latest single “Mama”. I first heard of Given through a collaboration he did with Una Rams and J-Smash titled “Ndo Livhuwa” which was a prayer of gratitude for life and great memories. He now returns with a heartfelt single “Mama” which touches on the love of a mother and guidance towards their child as each moment is impactful towards the child’s perspective on love and the world. A mother’s love is rich in warmth and care which is quite easy to miss as tomorrow is not a guarantee.
Given’s lyricism and artistry beams bright through his storytelling ability as he details a vivid image of vulnerability through the expression of his love for his late mother that he dearly misses. In the single he touches on a moment of reflection and how all the plans he used to tell his mother about are finally coming to light. He further extends with a moment of acceptance as he griefs with a heart of love and peace knowing well that his mother is in a better place watching over him.
“Mama” is quite a significant single to the rapper as he tells his story over an easy-listen beat. It is worth the listen as it possesses a strong message of unity and memories as well as love.
