We’ll Figure It Out is the debut album offered by musician and Matatiele’s finest Dox The Maverick. While searching for his fertile ground, Dox featured on the projects of his creative partners, Hurricane Dan Fischer, and Halo Yagami. We’ll Figure It Out is our introduction to him as an individual who honours the diversity of artistry. Moreover, his commitment to divergence is what makes the album notable. Its novelty is a potent contributor to the boundaries it is pushing.
Identity labels in music have been caging artistic expression since their inception. Music genres are given familiar names and friendly faces so that they can dominate in pre-established spaces. As a result, infiltrating such areas costs the genuineness that true artists fight to hold on to.
However, there is a growing movement of artists embracing fusion in their sound, allowing their identity label to remain a delightful mystery. In addition, there are South African artists who proudly pave the way for neo-soul and alternative fusions to flourish in your mind and offline playlist regularly. Artists like Dox The Maverick wear this evolving blend of genres handsomely.
Dox The Maverick is one-third of counter-culture collective Art Bishups, known for its debut album Mix’d Feelings. Hurricane Dan Fischer and Halo Yagami complete two-thirds of the trio, whom Dox calls “genius musicians.” In 2020, the Artbishups won the Dolby Inspired To Inspire Artist Spotlight Talent Search after an impressive performance of “Jar,” a single from their debut project.
The Art Bishups are responsible for the spectacular success of Halo Yagami’s debut album, You Can’t Replace The Sun, racking up over 300 thousand all-time plays on Apple Music to date. Clearly, there is an elevated desire for the sound the Art Bishups are trying to inspire. More than likely, We’ll Figure It Out can set the underappreciated alternative niche and its biggest supporters on fire.
“Fate is always on time. Our rendezvous with destiny doesn’t always happen at our command, but rather fate,” he said about the album concept. “The constant echoes of the words ‘We’ll Figure it Out’ I repeatedly told myself while stuck in a rented backroom were the only beacon of better days to come.” Standout singles “Don’t Look Back” and “Fun (feat Imane)” catch your ear with their psychedelic melodies and reassuring harmonies. Dox’s lyrical flow is a remarkable element of this project to note. Despite the popularity of catchy tunes for social media views, his polished lyricism and flow protrude staunchly.
Dox struggled to contain his excitement when asked what he thinks about South African hip-hop on the Off The Hook podcast. “It’s beautiful, man. There is alot going on. It’s a beautiful space to be in,” he said to host Lwazi Tha MC. If We’ll Figure It Out is anything to go by, Dox The Maverick sets himself apart as the pacesetter. The project presents a challenge to you to be greater. Feeling misplaced is not a danger; instead, it provides you with battle scars that will make you more extraordinary.
