Over the course of 2024, we have been lucky to witness the rise in the demand for RnB and Alternative in Africa as we get to see a number of amazing artists grow and receive well-deserved recognition from their industry peers through their hard work. Acts such as Dandi Noxx, Zimkitha, Rorisang Sechele, Fentse., Nannette, and many more. Today’s focus is on uprising singer and songwriter, Asaiowé who released her 6-track sophomore EP in October titled “Nostalgia” which features only one artist by the name of Si better known as Sihle Ganta for her influential work with brands.
“Nostalgia” is what I would describe as a gem and a gold mine for the fellow singer and songwriter as it sets her apart from many with the discovery of her sonic experience. It gives off her musical taste through the infusing of various sounds within the R&B and Alternative soundscapes. The project is first opened up with a highly creative interlude which is a play of the mind through the reverse experience thus setting us back in time and reality. She then follows with a heart-opening letter titled “Say Something” which practically expresses her love and commitment towards a particular relationship, urging for the partner to also express back how they truly feel. “Fye” then extends the storyline as she proclaims back her freedom with a pinch of salt as she figures out everything from the heartbreak to allowing herself to go through the healing phase.
“Feel Good” adds another flavor to the EP as she pleads for comfort, easing through the pain, letting go of all the intense memories, and delving deep into the great moments that make her feel good. “With Me” then brings a more trap soul feel to the project through a catchy hook and soothing lyrics. In the single Asaiowé, further lets out her thoughts as she puts herself first in the relationship and reminisces on the value of the relationship that it has brought into her life. She then closes off the project with “Done With You” which is my top favorite as it feels like I am tasting ‘Red Velvet Cake’ for the very first time. It has a laid-back feel to it as well through its easy-listen lyrics.
Overall, “Nostalgia” takes the cup for me and it truly sets a great tone for Asaiowe as many get to understand who she is and the type of music she makes. It cements her name amongst the greats and we truly cannot wait to witness her propel into her greatest form, leading and evolving the R&B and Alternative space through her stellar contributions. If you were looking for the right time to start supporting our fellow African artists, there couldn’t be a better time than now.
